Maple Island Guide: Levels 1 to 10 Monsters and Quests

Plan your Maple Island run in Classic World: monsters ranked by EXP per HP, where they spawn, the quests worth doing, and the boat to Victoria Island.

Sam Pelletier

After reading this guide you can plan a level 1 to 10 run through Maple Island: which monsters give the most EXP (experience points) for the damage you deal, which maps to hunt on at each level, which quests pay EXP and mesos (the in-game currency), and what is still unknown about the boat to Victoria Island. Where our data has a gap, we say so instead of guessing.

What Maple Island is at launch

MapleStory Classic World is Nexon's recreation of pre-Big Bang MapleStory, and it runs inside the existing Global MapleStory (GMS) client. Per mapleclassic.wiki, the launch game has two continents: Maple Island for levels 1 to 10, and Victoria Island for level 10 and up. Nexon's FAQ states that Founder's Access opens October 6, 2026, that Grand Launch is October 21, 2026, and that progress made during Founder's Access carries directly into Grand Launch with no wipe. Anything you do on Maple Island in the early window therefore counts.

Maple Island is the training ground. The wiki lists 66 monsters in the whole launch game, six of them bosses, and 221 quests. Only a small share of each lives on Maple Island. Orbis, El Nath and the rest of Ossyria are held back, and third job advancement is not available at launch, so Victoria Island is the next stop after this island, not a stepping stone to those places.

Three terms to know before you start. HP (hit points) is how much damage a monster takes before it dies. MP (mana points) is the resource skills spend. EXP is what you earn for kills and quests; you level up when the bar fills.

Monsters in the level 1 to 10 band, ranked by EXP per HP

The table below comes from mapleclassic.wiki data. The ranking is ours: it divides the EXP a monster gives by its HP. A higher figure means more EXP for each point of damage you have to deal. It does not account for how fast monsters respawn, how hard they hit you, or how much damage you deal, because none of those are in our data.

Here is how to read it. Your first targets are the three snails. Snail is level 1 with 45 HP, 30 MP and 2 EXP. Blue Snail is level 2 with 51 HP and 4 EXP. Red Snail is level 4 with 68 HP and 8 EXP. Red Snail ranks second at 0.118 EXP per HP, while Blue Snail sits ninth at 0.078. Red Snail gives 8 EXP for 68 HP, and Blue Snail gives 4 EXP for 51 HP, so once you can kill a Red Snail comfortably it is the more efficient of the two on this measure.

Two cautions about the table. First, Octopus (level 12) and Dark Stump (level 11) sit above the level 10 band, and their listed maps are not among the Maple Island maps in our spawn data, so do not plan around them on the island. Second, the wiki counts 12 monsters in the 1 to 10 band, but our ranking has ten rows plus Snail, and we do not have the names of the others. The numbers above are real; the list is not guaranteed complete.

Weaknesses are listed only for four monsters. Octopus and Slime are weak to Lightning; Stump and Dark Stump are weak to Fire. If your class has an elemental attack, that is a reason to prefer those targets, but the data does not say how much extra damage the weakness deals.

Where to hunt, by level band

Per mapleclassic.wiki, each map has a listed level range, and the Maple Island maps with ranges are below. The counts are how many of each snail the wiki records on that map. Snail Hunting Ground I, Snail Hunting Ground II and Snail Hunting Ground III have no level range in our data, so they are shown with the counts only.

Snail Hunting Ground INot listed17None listedNone listed
Snail Hunting Ground IINot listed3213None listed
Snail Hunting Ground IIINot listed20211

What the table tells you: Snail Hunting Ground II has the most Snails of any map in our data at 32, which makes it the natural place to start if you want a crowded map at level 1. Snail Hunting Ground III has 21 Blue Snails and only one Red Snail, so it suits the next step up in difficulty but not Red Snail hunting. For Red Snails, The Field West of Amherst stands out with 24, followed by Snail Field of Flowers with 12. The Field East of Amherst also lists 12 Red Snails, 11 Blue Snails and 12 Orange Mushrooms, but no map level range.

The mushroom monsters sit on the wider maps. Shroom appears in Mushroom Garden (two entries, with 23 and 10), The Field West of Amherst (17), A Split Road (14), In a Small Forest (12) and Hunting Ground Middle of the Forest I (10). Orange Mushroom appears in Dangerous Forest (12), The Field East of Amherst (12), Snail Field of Flowers (6) and Hunting Ground Middle of the Forest II (6), among others. Mushroom Garden also shows two Orange Mushroom entries (5 and 15), and one data table lists it as a Victoria Island map with a level range of 3 to 8 while another lists it as Maple Island. We cannot resolve that conflict, so check the map name when you arrive.

Quests worth doing on Maple Island

Per mapleclassic.wiki, these are the Maple Island quests in our data. A blank means the wiki entry has no value recorded.

The point of the table is the size of the rewards compared with grinding. Mai's Final Training pays 100 EXP, which equals 50 Snail kills at 2 EXP each. Pio's Collecting Recycled Goods also pays 100 EXP. These two are the only quests in the list that pay mesos, 150 each, so 300 mesos in total from 150 plus 150. Rain's Maple Quiz is listed at 245 EXP. The seven numbered quizzes pay 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 EXP, which adds up to 245, the same figure. The wiki data does not say whether the numbered quizzes are separate rewards or the same reward counted another way, so read the reward in your quest window before you decide.

The small quests (Roger's Apple at 2 EXP, Borrowing Sera's Mirror at 2 EXP, Bringing a Mirror to Heena at 2 EXP) are worth finishing only if they are on your way. Lucas' Reply at 50 EXP and Sam's Suggestion at 30 EXP are better value for a level 1 character. Letter for Lucas has no EXP recorded, so treat it as a story step until the wiki says otherwise. Also note that Mai's Final Training is listed at level 1 while Mai's Training is listed at level 3. The data does not give the prerequisite chain, so open the quest window and follow what it tells you.

A step-by-step route from level 1 to 10

Our data does not record the portal links between Maple Island maps, so we cannot tell you which exit leads where. Use the in-game world map to find each named map, and use the level ranges above to pick it. This route is built on EXP and map-level data, and it is a sensible default for solo play at these levels, not the only valid order.

  1. Open your quest window and accept the level 1 quests: Returning to Nina, Roger's Apple, What Sen wants to eat, Todd's How-to-Hunt, Sam's Suggestion and Lucas' Reply. You should now see each name listed as in progress. Quests cost nothing and give EXP before you have fought anything.
  2. Go to Snail Hunting Ground I, which holds 17 Snails, and defeat Snails until you reach level 2. You should now see your EXP bar rise by 2 per Snail.
  3. Move to Snail Garden, a map for levels 1 to 4 with 19 Blue Snails and 11 Red Snails. Blue Snail gives 4 EXP, so you earn more per kill than before. If a Red Snail seems too tough, stay on Blue Snails until you are comfortable.
  4. At level 3, take Biggs's Collection of Items and Mai's Training, which pay 70 EXP each. You should now see both quests in your window. Hand them in when the quest text says you are done.
  5. At level 5, collect the Rain's Maple Quiz quests and Pio's Collecting Recycled Goods. You should now see the quiz quests, each with its own EXP reward. Pio's quest pays 100 EXP and 150 mesos.
  6. Hunt Red Snails in Snail Field of Flowers (levels 1 to 6, 12 Red Snails). Red Snail gives 8 EXP, double what Blue Snail gives.
  7. As you approach level 8, move to The Field West of Amherst (24 Red Snails, 17 Shrooms) or Dangerous Forest (12 Orange Mushrooms). Orange Mushroom is level 8 with 142 HP and gives 15 EXP. It has the most HP in this group, so fight one at a time until you know how much damage you take.
  8. Finish Mai's Final Training, which pays 100 EXP and 150 mesos. You should now see both the EXP and the mesos land on hand-in.
  9. Near level 10, our data lists no Maple Island maps above level 8. Keep hunting Orange Mushrooms on the 1 to 8 maps, or move to the boat once you reach level 10.

The boat to Victoria Island

Per mapleclassic.wiki, Victoria Island is for level 10 and up, and it holds six towns: Henesys, Ellinia, Perion, Kerning City, Lith Harbor and Sleepywood. Maple Island has no towns of that kind, so the boat is how you reach them. Our data does not record the boat's fare, schedule, departure map or arrival map, and we will not guess at them. Nexon's FAQ is the place to look if those details are published there, and the in-game quest and NPC dialogue is the other place to check.

Before you leave, finish the quests you can: Mai's Final Training and Pio's Collecting Recycled Goods are the only two with a mesos payout in our list, and early mesos help with potions and gear on Victoria Island. Once there, the monsters on Maple Island, from Snail to Orange Mushroom, also appear on Victoria Island maps such as Henesys Hunting Ground I, Henesys Hunting Ground II and Henesys Hunting Ground III, but the other monsters on those maps are tougher.

First job advancement is part of the launch game, with four branches (Warrior, Magician, Bowman and Thief) plus Beginner. Choose your branch with a stated reason in mind, such as solo or party play. The class guides on this site cover that choice level by level.

What the data does not tell us

  • Drop rates and quantities. Per mapleclassic.wiki, Snail drops include Snail Shell, Bronze Ore, Red Potion and Green Headband, among others. Blue Snail drops include Blue Snail Shell, Iron Ore and Monster Card. Red Snail drops include Red Snail Shell, Silver Ore, Wooden Sword and Leather Sandals. The rate and min and max columns are blank for all of them.
  • Respawn times. None are recorded for the Maple Island maps. The only value in our data is Drake's Meal Table, a Victoria Island map with one Snail and a 300 second respawn, which is not a useful hunting spot.
  • EXP needed per level. We have no EXP table, so we cannot say how many kills a level takes.
  • Map connections and the boat. No portal links, fares or schedules are listed.
  • Two missing monsters. The wiki counts 12 monsters in the 1 to 10 band, and we have ten ranked rows plus Snail.

When Nexon's launch text or the wiki fills these gaps, this guide will be updated. Until then, treat every ranking above as a comparison of EXP and HP only, not a promise of speed.
