After reading this you will be able to walk from Kerning City to Shade in MapleStory Classic World, judge whether you are ready at your level, and plan a session around a boss that respawns on a long timer. The guide covers the stats, the route, the summon phase, the quest tied to the fight, and the gaps nobody has filled yet. Classic World runs inside the Global MapleStory (GMS) client, and Nexon's Founder's Access release notes list Shade among the five bosses you can challenge.
Assumptions before any numbers
Every figure below is tied to a specific situation, so here are the assumptions up front.
- Character level: 47, the minimum for the quest, unless a line says otherwise. Shade itself is level 48.
- Party size: not assumed. No solo or party clear data exists in my sources, so I do not claim any class solos it.
- Potion budget: not assumed. No damage-taken or kill-time figures are listed, so I cannot price the fight in potions.
- Sources: in-game numbers come from mapleclassic.wiki. Map and combat details the wiki does not have yet come from NiaMeowDB, and I label them "per NiaMeowDB".
Shade's listed stats
The table below is the wiki's entry for Shade. Read it as a planning sheet: HP tells you how long you will be hitting, the weakness line tells you what to bring, and the respawn line tells you how often you get a try.
| Stat | Value |
|---|
| Level | 48 |
| HP | 47,000 |
| MP | 250 |
| EXP per kill | 488 |
| Type | Boss, undead |
| Weak to | Holy |
| Resists | Poison |
| Listed respawn | 60 minutes |
| Primary location | Cabin of the Forsaken |
The table tells you Shade is a long fight with a small payout. A kill returns 488 EXP against 47,000 HP of damage you have to deal first. Per NiaMeowDB, other bosses at levels 55, 40 and 60 sit at 99.8, 101.3 and 102.4 HP per EXP, and NiaMeowDB ranks Shade at number 173 of 182 on a list where lower is better. I am quoting that ranking as the source gives it and will not recompute the ratio myself. It compares HP to reward only; it says nothing about how dangerous the fight is.
Where Shade spawns and how to get there
| Map | Region | Map level | Count on map | Respawn (s) |
|---|
| Cabin of the Forsaken | Victoria Island | 48 | 1 | 3600 |
There is exactly one Shade on exactly one map, and the 3600 seconds in the last column is the same 60 minutes as the stats table. Per NiaMeowDB the map also lists a mob rate of 1.0x and a respawn of about 1 hour, and it adds that a fresh spawn can slip a few seconds past the mark because the game tops up monsters on a cycle of about 7.5 seconds. Arriving at exactly 60 minutes is therefore not a guarantee that it is standing there.
Cabin of the Forsaken is not on mapleclassic.wiki yet, so the route below is per NiaMeowDB. It is 3 map changes and costs nothing.
- Start in Kerning City and take the hidden portal to Niora Hospital.
- On the hospital's first floor, find the hidden passage. It is a hidden portal that leads to The Murky Swamp.
- In The Murky Swamp, take the portal marked for the Cabin of the Forsaken.
Two of the three links are hidden portals, so a first-time visitor should expect to spend time looking. The quest below is what points you there: per NiaMeowDB, Jane Doe at Niora Hospital is the one who mentions the hidden passage.
What happens during the fight, per NiaMeowDB
The wiki gives Shade's core stats. The behavior details below come only from NiaMeowDB, and I flag where its labels are unclear.
The summon phase
Once Shade's HP falls below 50%, it starts calling Wraith. Half of 47,000 HP is 23,500 HP, which matches the 23,500 HP figure NiaMeowDB lists as the point where summoning starts.
| Summon detail | Value (per NiaMeowDB) |
|---|
| Starts below | 50% HP (23,500 HP left) |
| Call interval | 30 seconds |
| Monsters per call | 3 |
| Cap on summons | 3 |
| Wraith level | 48 |
| Wraith HP each | 2,350 |
With a cap of 3 summons, a single call of 3 Wraith is also the most you should face at any one moment, as I read the page. The practical point is that the second half of the fight is where a party with area attacks has an edge over a single-target attacker, because the Wraith keep arriving every 30 seconds while Shade still has 23,500 HP or less. The sources do not record how fast any class clears them, so treat that as reasoning, not measurement.
Other combat details
- Touch damage zone: 101 by 105 px.
- Speed: listed as Fast (speed 5).
- Knockback: the page lists 3,250 damage and a stagger of 0.6 seconds. It does not explain the 3,250 figure, so I will not say how to use it.
- Recovery: Shade regenerates, recovering 470 HP and 25 MP per tick. The tick length is not listed, so I cannot turn that into HP per second.
- Skill animation: a 1.32 second telegraph, then a 1.80 second full cycle.
- Death: the body fades over 1.20 seconds, and loot drops as soon as it dies.
NiaMeowDB also lists several timed effects: one lasting 3 seconds every 120 seconds with a reach of 900 by 600 px, a Darkness skill at level 2, one lasting 6 seconds every 60 seconds, and one lasting 120 seconds every 35 seconds, the last two with a reach of 600 by 240 px. The page does not make clear which timing belongs to which skill, so I will not match them up. What it does show is that the longest reach is 900 by 600 px, far larger than the 101 by 105 px body, so standing outside the body does not mean standing outside danger.
Weaknesses and who should fight it
The wiki lists Shade as undead, weak to Holy and resistant to Poison. Per NiaMeowDB, Holy attacks deal 25% extra damage. Two conclusions follow, both conditional:
- If you have a Holy-element attack: use it, since the 25% bonus applies across the whole 47,000 HP.
- If your damage is Poison-based: expect a poor fit, because Shade resists Poison.
I am not naming specific skills or classes for the Holy bonus, because my sources do not list which second-job skills carry the element. Check your own skill descriptions before you commit.
On accuracy, NiaMeowDB lists Shade's Avoid as 35 and gives accuracy figures at three attacker levels: 114 ACC at level 48, 136 ACC at level 43 and 158 ACC at level 38. I read these as the accuracy needed by an attacker of that level, so the lower your level, the more ACC you need, but the page does not spell out a hit-rate threshold. The page gives no row for level 47, so I will not quote one.
As for level, the quest requires 47 and Shade is 48. That is the only entry level either source gives. Neither records a recommended level for a solo clear, and I will not invent one. A plan, stated as a plan and not a finding: go in at the quest minimum only with a party, and treat solo attempts as unproven until players post kill times.
The quest tied to Shade: An Old Grudge
An Old Grudge is a level 47 quest, given by Jane Doe at Niora Hospital and turned in to Roxy. It is not repeatable. Its prerequisite is A Name She Couldn't Say, and the next quest in the chain is An Unresolved Question. Per NiaMeowDB, the prerequisite line also lists Kerning City Citizenship grade 8, and the chain starts at level 12 with First Greeting with Chun Ji. Citizenship itself opens at level 12 per Nexon's release notes.
| Step | Title | Go to | Talk to or hunt |
|---|
| 1 | Talk to Jane Doe | Niora Hospital | Talk to Jane Doe |
| 2 | Defeat 1 Shade | Cabin of the Forsaken (per NiaMeowDB) | Hunt Shade |
| 3 | Report to Roxy | Kerning City Civic Center | Talk to Roxy |
| Reward | Quantity |
|---|
| EXP | 11,400 |
| Mesos | 1,477 |
| Elixir | 10 |
| Kerning City Contribution | 180 |
The key comparison is the 11,400 EXP quest reward against the 488 EXP a normal kill gives. The first kill under the quest pays far more than any repeat kill, which is why the quest is the main reason to fight Shade at level 47: the reward is a one-time payment and the repeat value is small. The quest requires 1 Shade and nothing else, so a party can only carry you if the game credits the kill to you. The sources do not say how credit is shared, so check with your party before the first attempt.
The Kerning City Contribution row of 180 comes from NiaMeowDB, as does the grade 8 prerequisite. The wiki's reward table lists the EXP, mesos and Elixir quantities without naming a contribution type, so this is one place where only one source covers the detail.
Drops: what we do not know
No drops are recorded for Shade yet. That means no item list, no drop rates and no meso range. NiaMeowDB confirms only that loot drops as soon as Shade dies. Until players or the wiki add data, treat any Shade drop table you see elsewhere as unverified. The Elixir above comes from the quest, not from the boss, so do not count on it from repeat kills.
Time budget and EXP per hour
Here is what you can and cannot budget for.
| Item | Figure | Status |
|---|
| Map changes from Kerning City | 3 | Listed (per NiaMeowDB) |
| Respawn | 60 minutes | Listed (wiki) |
| EXP per kill | 488 | Listed (wiki) |
| Ceiling from repeat kills | 488 EXP per hour | Derived: 488 EXP per kill, one kill per 60 minutes |
| Kill time | Not listed | No data |
| Potion use per kill | Not listed | No data |
The ceiling from repeat kills is 488 EXP per hour from a single spawn. It is a ceiling because it assumes you kill Shade the moment it appears and that nobody else does. Fight time, walk time and potion cost all come off that figure. Compared with regular training, this is not a farming target. Treat Shade as a once-per-character quest fight, plus an optional repeat when you happen to be nearby.
If the map is crowded, Nexon's FAQ says to change channel: the same map loads with a different crowd, and monsters, drops and quests are identical on every channel. Classic World has one world, Windia, with 20 channels per Nexon's FAQ. The FAQ does not say whether a Shade kill on one channel affects the timer on another, so I will not claim you can channel-hop for an extra spawn. Party members must be on the same channel to play together.
A short checklist before you go
- Confirm you are level 47 or higher and that A Name She Couldn't Say is finished.
- Pick up An Old Grudge from Jane Doe at Niora Hospital.
- Check your skills for a Holy-element attack and avoid relying on Poison.
- Walk the 3-map route to Cabin of the Forsaken and look for the hidden portals.
- Plan for the Wraith phase below 23,500 HP, with 3 arriving every 30 seconds.
- Return to Roxy at Kerning City Civic Center for 11,400 EXP and 1,477 mesos.
Founder's Access began on October 6, 2026, and Grand Launch is October 21, 2026. Nexon says progress carries over with no wipe, so a Shade kill now counts later. This page will be updated if the wiki adds Cabin of the Forsaken or the drop list.
