Weapon Reach in Classic World: How Far Each Attack Hits

Measured weapon reach in pixels for every weapon family in Classic World, with swing and thrust differences and what it means for safe training.

Teddy Vance

After reading this guide you will be able to find your weapon family, read its confirmed basic maximum in pixels, and judge how far from a monster you can stand while a normal attack still connects. It is a mechanics reference for MapleStory Classic World, Nexon's recreation of pre-Big Bang MapleStory that runs inside the existing Global MapleStory (GMS) client. Founder's Access began October 6, 2026, and Grand Launch is October 21, 2026.

Assumptions and source. Every reach figure below is a horizontal distance in pixels, taken from NiaMeowDB's weapon reach guide, updated October 11, 2026. The wiki data we have on hand does not cover weapon reach, so there is no second source to compare against, and every number is attributed to NiaMeowDB. We have not re-measured anything ourselves. Reach belongs to the weapon and its animation, not to your level, so the tables hold for a level 10 Beginner with bare hands just as they do for any second-job character.

What reach means in this guide

Reach is how far in front of your character a normal attack can land. Per NiaMeowDB, each attack animation produces a hit box with a height and a span. The span has a near edge and a far edge, both measured out from your character. The confirmed basic maximum is the farthest distance at which a plain, non-skill attack was verified to connect for that weapon family. The charts also list Final Attack follow-ups and crouched attacks, and these can be longer or shorter than the basic maximum.

NiaMeowDB reports that the close-range hit zones came out identical in its first and second test passes. It also says it checked the arrow and star base distances and the passive maximums in August 2026, and that the skill descriptions at launch state the same base distances. Those arrow and star distances are not in our fact sheet, so we do not quote them.

Reach by weapon family

This table is the core of the guide. It gives each weapon family's confirmed basic maximum, the animation that produces it, and the other presentations NiaMeowDB measured. Read down the column to see how reach shrinks as the weapon gets lighter.

The headline is the spread. A spear or polearm has a confirmed basic maximum of 133 px, while a named 1H Sword such as the Long Sword is listed at 85 px. Bare hands sit at the bottom at 64 px, so even the shortest ordinary weapon family reaches farther than a punch.

Two details are easy to miss. First, the maximum can change with the specific item you hold. The Zamadar daggers are listed at 102 px, while other daggers are listed at 85 px. Second, Final Attack presentations can outreach the basic maximum: the long-set 2H Sword Deep thrust is listed at 135 px against a basic maximum of 127 px. A Final Attack is a follow-up that only fires when the skill triggers, so do not plan your standing distance around it.

Swings, thrusts and which one you get

Per NiaMeowDB, a basic attack with a sword, axe, blunt weapon, spear, polearm or dagger resolves as a swing 60% of the time and as a thrust 40% of the time. At close range a bow always uses a swinging animation, while a crossbow divides evenly between its two, 50/50. The source does not describe any rule behind the choice beyond those proportions, so treat it as a rate, not a pattern you can read and exploit.

This matters because swings and thrusts differ in height as well as length. NiaMeowDB records a spear or polearm Side swing climbing to 125 px over your feet, whereas its thrusts stay near torso level, roughly 30 px up. The chart cards show the same pattern: the spear Overhead swing box is 144 px tall, while Thrust 1 is only 29 px tall. A tall box can catch a monster on a ledge above you or one that hops toward you. A flat thrust box cannot, so a monster floating a little over your head may escape a thrust and still be caught by a swing.

Spear and polearm presentations

The spear and polearm chart is the most detailed in the reference, so here it is in full. The last column shows where the hit zone starts and ends, measured out from your character.

PresentationTypeReach (px)Box height (px)Zone, out from you (px)
Full sweep (Final Attack)Swing14414667 to 144
Overhead swing (Basic)Swing13314451 to 133
Thrust 1 (Basic)Thrust1302936 to 130
Deep thrust (Final Attack)Thrust1243310 to 124
Side swing (Basic)Swing12014552 to 120
Short swing (Basic)Swing11614247 to 116
Crouched attack (Basic)Crouch1132823 to 113
Thrust 2 (Basic)Thrust1114624 to 111

The near edge is the part people overlook. The Full sweep zone begins 67 px out and the Overhead swing zone begins 51 px out, so a monster pressed right against your character sits inside the gap. The Deep thrust zone begins at 10 px, which makes it the one that covers almost everything in front of you. In short, a thrust is a long, thin poke, while a swing is a tall, wide arc that starts a little way from your body. How a monster's own body width interacts with these near edges is not given in the data we have.

Two sets of 2H Sword animations

NiaMeowDB divides 2H Swords into two animation sets. The Scimitar, Lion's Fang, Sparta and Doombringer use a longer set. Every other 2H Sword uses the shorter set, which the source illustrates with a Wooden Sword. In both sets, Wide swing and Deep thrust are the extra motions that come from Final Attack: Sword.

PresentationOther 2H Swords (px)Long set (px)
Deep thrust (Final Attack)123135
Thrust 2 (Basic)98127
Wide swing (Final Attack)92116
Thrust 1 (Basic)98110
Crouched attack (Basic)92109
Swing 1 (Basic)86100
Swing 3 (Basic)7887
Swing 2 (Basic)7586

Every row is longer in the long set. The headline comparison is the confirmed basic maximum: 127 px for the four long-set swords against 98 px for the rest. If you are choosing between two 2H Swords, check the item name first, because the animation set changes your reach a great deal. The fact sheet names only those four long-set swords, so confirm that an item is on that list before assuming it gets the longer animations.

Which classes gain from longer reach

Reach belongs to the weapon, so the real question is which job lines can equip a long one. These are conditional readings of the table, not rankings.

  • Warrior with a spear or polearm, solo: the 133 px basic maximum is the longest on the list, and the tall swing boxes also catch monsters above you.
  • Warrior with a 2H Sword: reach depends on the set. The long set reaches 127 px on Thrust 2, while the other 2H Swords reach 98 px.
  • Thief with a dagger: the Zamadar daggers at 102 px outreach other daggers at 85 px. The Deep thrust is marked as not used for daggers, so only the swings and the crouched attack apply.
  • Magician with a wand or staff: normal attacks come from Swing 2 only, at 69 px. Melee reach is short, so a Magician's spacing comes from spells, whose distances are not in our fact sheet.
  • Bowman at close range: a bow is listed at 92 px and a crossbow at 86 px. The longer arrow reach is a separate base distance that we cannot quote.

For level bands and builds, see the Warrior, Bowman, Magician and Thief guides already on the site. This page covers distances only.

Using reach for safer training

Longer reach lets you land hits from farther away, which means fewer moments standing inside a monster's contact range. The fact sheet lists no monster contact ranges, so the steps below are a method for finding your own safe distance, not a measured safe distance.

  1. Find your weapon family in the first table and note the confirmed basic maximum.
  2. Check the item name if you carry a dagger, 1H Sword or 2H Sword, because the maximum changes with the specific item.
  3. Note the near edge if your weapon swings a lot. A zone that starts 51 to 67 px out, as on the spear's Overhead swing and Full sweep, can miss a monster hugging your character.
  4. Test on a low-risk monster and mark the farthest spot where a plain attack still connects. NiaMeowDB itself invites players to report behavior that differs from its charts.
  5. Allow for the 60/40 split. Because swings and thrusts come up at those rates, some attacks will miss a monster that the other presentation would have caught.

Pair this with a monster's HP and EXP numbers from the training spot guides on the site. Reach lowers the damage you take per kill, but it does not raise EXP per hour by itself.

What the data does not tell us

  • No monster contact range or attack range is listed, so we cannot state a safe standing distance for any specific monster.
  • The numeric arrow and star base distances are not in our fact sheet, so ranged reach for Bowmen and for Thieves using stars is not covered.
  • No spell distances for Magicians are listed.
  • No wiki reach figures are on hand, so the NiaMeowDB numbers have nothing to be checked against here. If the wiki and NiaMeowDB later disagree, we will give both.
  • Per NiaMeowDB, Attack Speed alters the duration of each action, but no figures for how reach changes with speed are listed. Its charts were recorded at a single shared preview speed.

Skill changes between the old test and launch can shift animations too, so recheck the numbers after any patch that touches weapons.
