After reading this you will be able to pick an STR-leaning stat split for a Bandit in MapleStory Classic World, judge whether the faster STR daggers repay their cost, and see where the build loses to a standard LUK Bandit. The plan comes from Allog's community guide on NiaMeowDB, Path of the Ruffian, posted September 16, 2026 and edited September 17, 2026 for the October 6 early access release. Credit for the build belongs to Allog. I have written the explanations myself and checked the guide's numbers against our fact sheet where both have one.
Assumptions for everything below: a Bandit that took its second job at level 30, melee play with a dagger, no stated potion budget, and the sample gear NiaMeowDB lists beside each result. Where a figure is missing, such as EXP per hour for this build or any drop rate, I say it is not listed.
What an STR Bandit is, and what it is not
The name is misleading. Per mapleclassic.wiki, the Bandit is a second job of the Thief branch, taken at level 30 in Kerning City, wielding a dagger, with LUK as the primary stat. The Assassin is the other second job and uses a claw. STR never becomes the Bandit's damage stat.
Per NiaMeowDB, the damage formula doubles LUK and adds STR and DEX once each on the top roll. A point of LUK is therefore worth twice a point of STR or DEX at the maximum roll. So the Ruffian build is not about hitting harder with STR. It is about meeting equip requirements. One family of daggers asks for STR where the usual family asks for DEX, and those daggers swing one speed stage faster. You hold a little STR instead of extra DEX and put the rest of your AP into LUK.
The stat plans, side by side
Allog compares several splits. The table restates each one as a base AP rule. "Level minus 5" means the base stat tracks your level with that offset, as the guide writes it.
| Build | Base STR | Base DEX | Remaining AP | Gearing effect (per NiaMeowDB) |
|---|
| Regular Bandit | None | Level minus 5 | LUK | DEX daggers only; slightly better against a standing boss, slower swings |
| Full STR | Level minus 5 | Level minus 10 | LUK | Easiest gear to equip; you scroll LUK instead of STR; weaker at low levels |
| 4 STR | 4 | Level minus 10 | LUK | Needs an earring with 6 STR at level 22 for the first STR dagger; scroll spending starts sooner |
| 5 STR | 5 | Level minus 10 | LUK | One more STR lets an earring built with only 100% scrolls work early; 60% scrolls still arrive sooner than on other builds |
| 11 STR (low-STR) | 11 | Keep at 25 if you can | LUK | No scrolls until level 30; only 100% scrolls until level 50 |
The DEX note on the 11 STR row is cut off in the text I have, so open Allog's full post before you commit points to that split.
Read the table as a scroll budget in disguise. The less STR you carry in base AP, the more STR you must scroll onto gear, and the earlier you pay for 60% scrolls. The 11 STR build postpones that spending until you can afford it. The 4 STR build pays early for extra LUK. Full STR suits a player who cannot scroll at all and accepts weaker early damage.
What the guide's sample sets assume
Per NiaMeowDB, the level 30 samples use the 5 STR build with one earring made of 100% scrolls and nothing else scrolled. The level 50 samples use 100% stat scrolls on the overall, earrings and cape, with the low-STR build moving its earrings to 60% scrolls. The level 70 samples use 60% scrolls on the overall, earrings and cape, plus 60% W.ATK scrolls on the glove and dagger. The resulting numbers live in NiaMeowDB's interactive builder and are not in our fact sheet, so I do not quote them.
Daggers: the STR line against the DEX line
This is the core of the build. Per NiaMeowDB's comparison, every dagger in both lines still runs on LUK for damage.
| Level | DEX dagger | Needs | W.ATK and speed | STR-line dagger | Needs | W.ATK and speed |
|---|
| 30 | Reef Claw | 25 DEX, 60 LUK | 48, Fast 4 | Cass | 25 STR, 60 LUK | 47, Faster 3 |
| 40 | Gephart | 35 DEX, 80 LUK | 58, Fast 4 | Korean Fan | 70 LUK | 55, Faster 3 |
| 50 | Shinkita | 45 DEX, 100 LUK | 68, Fast 4 | Sai | 45 STR, 100 LUK | 67, Faster 3 |
| 60 | Deadly Fin | 55 DEX, 120 LUK | 78, Fast 4 | Serpent's Coil | 55 STR, 120 LUK | 77, Faster 3 |
| 70 | Kandine | 65 DEX, 140 LUK | 88, Fast 4 | Golden River | 65 STR, 140 LUK | 87, Faster 3 |
Two things stand out. First, the attack gap is small. At level 30 the Reef Claw has 48 W.ATK and Cass has 47, a difference of 1. Allog's changelog agrees that STR daggers now trail their DEX counterparts by about 1 W.ATK. NiaMeowDB's separate Bandit class guide says 3, so the two pages differ; the table rows support 1. Second, the Korean Fan at level 40 needs no STR and no DEX, only 70 LUK. Per Allog it drops from Lorang, and finding one smooths the awkward stretch at levels 35 and 40, when low-STR builds may have to wear some DEX gear to equip any dagger.
The changelog also says Bazlud (level 45) moved to the Faster 3 speed, which fills the hole between Cass at level 30 and Sai at level 50. Per NiaMeowDB, Weaponcrafting can make Halfmoon Zamadar at skill level 7 and Gephart at skill level 8. No Shinkita recipe exists, so decide how you will get a level 50 dagger before you split AP between STR and DEX.
Where it beats a standard LUK Bandit
Dagger Booster moves both lines up two stages, so a Faster 3 STR dagger ends at speed 1 while a Fast 4 DEX dagger ends at speed 2. Per NiaMeowDB, attack speed is not capped at 2 in Classic World, so the extra stage keeps mattering. The level 70 comparison:
| Level 70 Savage Blow comparison (per NiaMeowDB) | Result |
|---|
| Casts per minute with Golden River (STR line) | 90 |
| Casts per minute with Kandine (DEX line) | 83 |
| Damage lead on identical stats | About 7% |
| Lead after spending 65 STR on Golden River | 1.3% |
The 7% lead assumes both daggers sit on the same stats, which is not how you will play. Once the 65 STR that Golden River requires comes out of your AP, the lead falls to 1.3%. The larger catch, per NiaMeowDB, is that level 70 Thief armor still requires 60 DEX. The 65 STR must come from gear, or you go armorless or wear low-level common armor.
What a spare stat point buys
NiaMeowDB's level 70 test starts from 343 LUK, 65 DEX and 4 STR, which averages 3,708 per Savage Blow.
| Change | Average Savage Blow | Gain |
|---|
| Add 10 LUK | 3,793 | +85 (+2.31%) |
| Add 10 STR | 3,756 | +48 (+1.30%) |
Ten LUK adds 85 and ten STR adds 48, so on raw damage a spare point belongs in LUK. STR earns its place only through the dagger speed it unlocks.
The costs Allog lists
- Overall DPS runs roughly 3 to 4% under a regular Bandit, depending on the build. That sits oddly beside the 1.3% lead at level 70 above, so treat both as conditional on level, gear and scrolls.
- At certain levels a regular Bandit reaches the one-hit kill threshold sooner.
- Accuracy can be slightly lower, depending on how much DEX you give up.
- Low-STR builds have awkward gearing at levels 30 to 40.
- The level 35 overall is an important build item, and only the female Thief can use it, per Allog.
- Range is shorter than a sindit build.
Allog still calls the sindit (a Bandit that uses ranged training early, then swaps to melee) probably the optimal build, since it takes fewer hits and saves potions. At level 30 as a Bandit who wants to stay in melee throughout, the Ruffian plan is the alternative.
Skills and SP order
Allog has you take Double Stab as your main attack and raise Dagger Mastery to its cap before Savage Blow. Per the fact sheet, Double Stab has a max level of 20, costs 8 to 16 MP and hits one target twice for 160 percent. Savage Blow has a max level of 30, costs 14 to 28 MP and hits one target 6 times at 75 percent each, so 6 hits at 75 percent is 450 percent in total at max level. Dagger Booster requires Dagger Mastery Lv 5, which is why Mastery comes first. NiaMeowDB's no-reset SP table for a dagger Bandit:
| Level | SP goes to | Result |
|---|
| 30 | Haste +1 | Haste 1, max Double Stab as the attack |
| 31 | Dagger Mastery +3 | Mastery 3 |
| 32 | Dagger Mastery +2, Dagger Booster +1 | Mastery 5, Booster 1 |
| 33 to 37 | Dagger Mastery +15 | Mastery 20, the cap |
| 38 to 44 | Savage Blow +21 | Savage Blow 21 |
| 45 to 47 | Savage Blow +9 | Savage Blow 30, the cap |
Why does Double Stab stay on your bar so long? NiaMeowDB's calculator at level 40, with its sample gear and a target with 0 WDEF, gives this:
| Level 40 attack | Average hit | Damage in one minute | Damage per MP spent |
|---|
| Lucky Seven 20 | 615 | 51,004 | 38.4 |
| Double Stab 20 | 702 | 70,210 | 43.9 |
| Savage Blow 21 | 856 | 71,011 | 35.6 |
Savage Blow 21 out-damages Double Stab 20 by only about 1.1% per minute (71,011 against 70,210), while costing more MP for each point of damage (35.6 against 43.9). Those rows assume a Fast 4 dagger with Booster. A Faster 3 STR dagger changes the swing count, and I have no calculator row for that case. NiaMeowDB also notes that an SP Reset Scroll costs 7,000 NX; the table above never resets, so the Ruffian path does not need one.
Gear checklist for a melee Bandit
- Early levels: per Allog, get through them fast and save mesos for the razor at level 5. If you plan to hold STR, put those points in on the character creation screen for a little extra maximum damage.
- Level 18: the quest Mother's Gold Watch (Chief Stan, Henesys) pays 1,371 EXP and 526 mesos and rewards Weighted Earrings, so you need not buy earrings.
- Level 25: Old Raggedy Cape is a free reward from the level 23 quest Stranger's Identity. It has 12 WDEF and 5 slots.
- Level 28: Squishy Shoes give 1 each of STR, DEX, LUK and INT and are the only shoes with LUK, per NiaMeowDB. You craft them.
- Level 35: Red Avenger, an overall, needs 25 DEX and 60 LUK and has 83 WDEF, 6 STR and 10 slots. Allog calls it the strongest piece at that level, and only female Thieves can use it.
- Scrolls: craft them with Arcforge, or buy them from citizenship vendors: Henesys for STR and DEX, Kerning City for LUK and INT.
Accuracy and training from level 30
Per NiaMeowDB, Base ACC is floor((1.2 x DEX + 2 x Level + 0.6 x LUK) x 0.25 + 15). That works out to 0.30 ACC per DEX point and 0.15 per LUK point, which is why holding less DEX leaves STR builds slightly short on accuracy. The reference lists the ACC needed for a guaranteed hit at equal level: Jr. Wraith (level 34) 82, Lorang (level 38) 79, Zombie Lupin (level 41) 95 and Wraith (level 48) 104. Fighting below a monster's level raises the requirement. Allog adds that all three builds he compares can hit Zombie Mushmom at level 50 with no ACC scrolls.
Below is our own ranking of the top ten monsters in the level 30 to 60 band by EXP per HP point, one map each. It ignores the gap between your level and the monster's, and no spawn timing is recorded.
| Rank | Monster | Level | HP | EXP per kill | EXP/HP | Map (count) |
|---|
| 1 | Fairy 3 | 29 | 593 | 54 | 0.091 | Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North VI (2) |
| 2 | Fairy 1 | 29 | 593 | 54 | 0.091 | Cloud Park IV (2) |
| 3 | Fairy 2 | 29 | 593 | 54 | 0.091 | Someone Else's House (2) |
| 4 | Fairy 4 | 29 | 593 | 54 | 0.091 | The Breathing Rock (2) |
| 5 | Iron Hog | 28 | 572 | 52 | 0.091 | Pig Park II (22) |
| 6 | Evil Eye | 27 | 606 | 50 | 0.083 | The Cave of Evil Eye III (38) |
| 7 | Golden Stirge | 42 | 1,278 | 93 | 0.073 | Decayed Tunnel II (4) |
| 8 | Fire Boar | 32 | 842 | 60 | 0.071 | The Burnt Land V (26) |
| 9 | Ligator | 31 | 853 | 58 | 0.068 | The Swamp of Despair I (41) |
| 10 | Jr. Wraith | 34 | 982 | 66 | 0.067 | Line 2 (Area 1) (83) |
At level 30 as a Bandit, the table reads like this. The Fairy rows top the ranking but hold only 2 per map, so they will not keep a melee dagger busy. Iron Hog packs 22 into Pig Park II but pays 52 EXP per kill. Fire Boar at level 32 pays 60 EXP per kill with 26 on The Burnt Land V, which suits quick swings. Jr. Wraith pays 66 EXP per kill with 83 on Line 2 (Area 1), and it is also the monster in NiaMeowDB's accuracy table, so you can check your ACC against its 82 figure first. None of the Bandit skills in our table carries an element, so the Weak to column does not change your pick.
What we do not know yet
- No drop rates are listed, so we cannot say how practical a Korean Fan farm from Lorang is.
- No spawn count is recorded for the dagger-drop monsters, and EXP per hour for each build is not in our fact sheet.
- NiaMeowDB's guide mentions third job skills. Third job advancement is not available at launch, so ignore those parts.
- The maximum level is 100, but only first and second job exist at launch, so everything above belongs to those two jobs.

Frequently asked
- Is STR a good stat for a Bandit in Classic World?
- Not as a damage stat. Per NiaMeowDB, one LUK counts twice as much as one STR on the maximum roll, and ten LUK adds 85 to an average Savage Blow against 48 for ten STR. STR matters only because some daggers list it as an equip requirement.
- What is the difference between STR daggers and DEX daggers for a Bandit?
- Per NiaMeowDB, STR daggers swing one speed stage faster (Faster 3 against Fast 4) but carry about 1 W.ATK less in its table rows, such as 47 for Cass against 48 for Reef Claw at level 30. Both lines still use LUK for damage.
- Does the STR Bandit beat a regular LUK Bandit?
- Only narrowly, and only at some levels. Per NiaMeowDB, Golden River beats Kandine by about 7% on identical stats at level 70, but only 1.3% once you pay the 65 STR. The guide also puts overall DPS around 3 to 4% below a regular Bandit.
- Which Thief second job uses daggers in Classic World?
- The Bandit, taken at level 30 in Kerning City. The Assassin is the other second job and uses claws. Third job is not available at launch.
- Do I need an SP Reset Scroll for the Ruffian build?
- No. The no-reset SP table in NiaMeowDB spends Dagger Mastery first, then Savage Blow, with no reset. NiaMeowDB says an SP Reset Scroll costs 7,000 NX, which that route avoids.
