By the end of this guide you will be able to read a weapon's speed label, find its tier, look up the milliseconds per attack for that tier, and compare two weapons of different speed without guessing. It covers how MapleStory Classic World labels attack speed, which weapon classes sit in which tiers, what Booster skills are recorded as doing, and where the published data stops. Every in-game figure here is from mapleclassic.wiki, which this site treats as the authority for in-game numbers.
Assumptions: what these numbers cover
Attack speed is a property of the weapon and, for casters, of the spell. It does not depend on your level, your class, your party size or your potion budget, so none of those are assumed below. It also says nothing about damage. A faster weapon is not automatically a stronger one, and the sources record no damage figures, no kills per hour and no EXP per kill for any weapon. Where this guide says "per attack", it means the time one attack animation takes in milliseconds (ms), and nothing more.
Classic World runs inside the Global MapleStory (GMS) client with first and second job only, so the weapon classes below are the ones the wiki documents. Its speed table covers 162 weapons that carry a speed.
Speed labels and tiers
Per mapleclassic.wiki, attack speed is a game mechanic that applies to weapons and is shown as a rating: Fastest, Faster, Fast, Normal, Slow, Slower and Slowest. Behind each label sits a numeric tier from 0 (quickest) to 12 (slowest). Booster skills are what increase it.
| Speed label | Tier |
|---|
| Fastest | 0 to 1 |
| Faster | 2 to 3 |
| Fast | 4 to 5 |
| Normal | 6 |
| Slow | 7 to 8 |
| Slower | 9 |
| Slowest | 10 to 12 |
The labels are coarse. Tier 4 and tier 5 both read Fast, yet later in this guide you will see they differ in milliseconds per attack. If you compare weapons by label alone, you throw away information. Compare by tier.
Which weapon classes sit where
The wiki notes that every weapon class occupies a narrow band of tiers and most span two, so the choice within a class matters as much as the choice between classes. The table lists each class, how many documented weapons it has, its tier range and the quickest example the wiki names.
| Weapon class | Weapons | Tiers | Labels | Quickest example |
|---|
| Claw | 23 | 3 to 5 | Faster to Fast | Meba |
| Dagger | 18 | 3 to 4 | Faster to Fast | Cass |
| One-handed axe | 9 | 3 to 5 | Faster to Fast | Scythe |
| One-handed blunt weapon | 23 | 2, 4 to 5 | Faster to Fast | Wizet Secret Agent Suitcase |
| One-handed sword | 17 | 4 to 5 | Fast | Beginner's Long Sword |
| Bow | 9 | 5 to 6 | Fast to Normal | Battle Bow |
| Two-handed sword | 9 | 5 to 6 | Fast to Normal | Aluminum Baseball Bat |
| Wand | 9 | 6 | Normal | Beginner's Wooden Wand |
| Crossbow | 8 | 6 to 7 | Normal to Slow | Balanche |
| Two-handed axe | 8 | 6 to 7 | Normal to Slow | Blue Axe |
| Two-handed blunt weapon | 8 | 6 to 7 | Normal to Slow | Mithril Maul |
| Staff | 6 | 7 | Slow | Arc Staff |
| Spear | 7 | 7 to 8 | Slow | Fish Spear |
| Polearm | 8 | 7 to 8 | Slow | Studded Polearm |
Read the table from top to bottom and a pattern appears. Claws, daggers, one-handed axes and one-handed blunt weapons are the quick group. One-handed swords, bows and two-handed swords sit in the middle. Wands, crossbows, two-handed axes, two-handed blunt weapons, staves, spears and polearms make up the slow end. One-handed swords never reach Faster: the whole class sits at tiers 4 to 5, which the wiki labels Fast.
The one outlier is the Wizet Secret Agent Suitcase. It is a one-handed blunt weapon at tier 2, a full step ahead of every dagger and claw, in a class that otherwise starts at tier 4. Treat it as a single exception, not a class trait.
How the 162 weapons spread across tiers
| Tier | Label | Weapons |
|---|
| 2 | Faster | 1 |
| 3 | Faster | 9 |
| 4 | Fast | 54 |
| 5 | Fast | 31 |
| 6 | Normal | 31 |
| 7 | Slow | 25 |
| 8 | Slow | 11 |
Tier 4 alone holds 54 of the 162 documented weapons, which is a third. The whole range sits inside seven of the thirteen defined tiers (tiers 2 to 8). No documented weapon sits at tiers 0, 1, or 9 to 12, so the Fastest, Slower and Slowest labels exist in the scheme but have no weapon in this table.
Read the table by label and the Fast rows (tiers 4 and 5) carry more weapons than the Slow rows (tiers 7 and 8). The wiki's reading is that this compression is why one step matters so much: with only seven tiers in use, there is no such thing as a small speed difference.
Converting tiers to milliseconds per attack
The wiki also lists animation time per tier. The columns differ by weapon type, so pick the column that matches your weapon before reading across.
| Tier | One-handed and bow | Two-handed stab | Crossbow |
|---|
| 1 | 570 ms | 540 ms | 570 ms |
| 2 | 600 ms | 570 ms | 630 ms |
| 3 | 660 ms | 630 ms | 690 ms |
| 4 | 720 ms | 660 ms | 720 ms |
| 5 | 750 ms | 720 ms | 780 ms |
| 6 | 810 ms | 750 ms | 840 ms |
| 7 | 870 ms | 810 ms | 900 ms |
| 8 | 900 ms | 870 ms | 930 ms |
Three things stand out.
- The steps are not equal. In the one-handed and bow column, tier 4 to tier 5 goes from 720 ms to 750 ms, while tier 5 to tier 6 goes from 750 ms to 810 ms. The second step is the wider one. Tier 7 to tier 8 goes from 870 ms to 900 ms, a narrower step again.
- The crossbow column is slower than the one-handed column at most tiers. At tier 6 the crossbow reads 840 ms against 810 ms for one-handed weapons and bows. At tier 4 the two columns are level at 720 ms.
- The two-handed stab column is the quickest at every tier from 1 to 8. At tier 4 it reads 660 ms against 720 ms in the other two columns. The wiki data here does not list which weapon classes use this column beyond its name, so do not assume; check the weapon's entry on mapleclassic.wiki before using it.
The table starts at tier 1, but no documented weapon sits there, so treat the first row as a reference point for the scale rather than a weapon you can equip.
Wands and staves
Casters have a separate table, with figures given as approximate.
| Spell group | Wand | Staff |
|---|
| Offensive spells | about 810 ms | about 870 ms |
| Heal and buffs | about 600 ms | about 660 ms |
These line up with the one-handed column. A wand is tier 6 and the one-handed column gives 810 ms at tier 6, while a staff is tier 7 and the column gives 870 ms at tier 7. Heal and buffs cast faster than offensive spells on either weapon: about 600 ms against about 810 ms on a wand, and about 660 ms against about 870 ms on a staff. Every caster figure inherits the wiki's "about", so do not treat any of them as exact.
What Booster skills change
The wiki records one fact about Booster skills: they increase attack speed. That is all the data says. It does not list which Booster belongs to which job, how many tiers a Booster moves a weapon, the duration, the MP cost or the level requirement. So this guide will not quote any of those.
What you can do with the data you do have:
- Find your weapon's base tier in the class table.
- Read the milliseconds for that tier in the matching column.
- Look up the Booster skill's entry on mapleclassic.wiki for the exact tier change before planning around it.
- Re-read the millisecond table with the new tier once you know it, because the steps are uneven and the gain depends on where you start.
Because the quick group already sits at tiers 3 to 5 and the slow end at tiers 7 to 8, a Booster's value depends on the weapon it is applied to. How far it moves a weapon is the number to look up, and this guide does not have it.
How to compare two weapons of different speed
Follow these steps whenever two weapons have different tiers. The method is weapon-side only; for hit chance, see the accuracy guide on this site.
- Find each weapon's tier. Use the weapon's wiki entry. If you only know the class, the class table above gives the range.
- Pick the right column. One-handed and bow weapons use the first column, crossbows have their own, and wands and staves use the caster table.
- Read milliseconds per attack for each tier. Write both down. For example, a tier 4 one-handed weapon reads 720 ms and a tier 5 one reads 750 ms; a tier 5 bow reads 750 ms and a tier 6 bow reads 810 ms.
- Divide damage per hit by milliseconds per attack for each weapon. The higher result is the faster damage rate, all else equal. If the slower weapon's per-hit damage does not make up for its extra milliseconds, the faster weapon wins on rate.
- Then check accuracy and cost. A weapon that misses more, or needs more potions per hour, can lose its edge in practice. The sources have no per-kill or per-hour figures to settle that.
Step four is a ratio check, not a recorded result. Because the wiki data used here holds no weapon damage values, this guide cannot name a winner between any two specific weapons. It can only tell you how to set the comparison up once you have the damage number for each.
Skills that run their own animation length
Per mapleclassic.wiki, two skills break the tier pattern. Heal casts faster than other spells, which matches the heal-and-buff row above. Savage Blow casts on a longer base than a normal dagger strike, about 20 percent slower per hit than Double Stab on the same weapon. That is the trade for striking six times in one cast. So a dagger's tier tells you the speed of a basic strike, not necessarily the speed of every skill used with it.
What the data does not tell us
- No damage values, so no weapon can be ranked on damage per second from these sources.
- No Booster tier change, duration, cost or level requirement.
- No kills per hour or EXP per kill by weapon class.
- No documented weapons at tiers 0, 1, or 9 to 12.
- No list of which weapon classes use the two-handed stab column.
- No exact figures for casters, only the approximate "about" values.
When mapleclassic.wiki fills those gaps, this guide should be updated with the recorded figures rather than estimates in the meantime.
