After reading this glossary you should be able to follow a chat line like "LF party for PQ, no KS please" and know what is being asked. You should also know which terms have launch figures behind them and which ones the sources do not yet cover. Where a term has a Classic World number, it comes from mapleclassic.wiki or Nexon's FAQ. Where no number is listed, I say so instead of filling the gap.
MapleStory Classic World is Nexon's recreation of pre-Big Bang MapleStory, and it runs inside the existing Global MapleStory (GMS) client. Much of its vocabulary is inherited from older play. My rule here is to say what a term means, then what is confirmed for Classic World. I will not assume the two always match.
Chat shorthand you will see first
These are the words that scroll past in a hunting map before anyone explains them. They are community slang rather than official terms, so none of them has a Nexon definition.
- KS (kill stealing): attacking a monster another player is already fighting and taking the kill. It is a manners issue, not a game system. No Classic World rule on it is listed in the sources I have, so treat it as etiquette.
- PQ (party quest): a team objective that needs a group. Per mapleclassic.wiki, party quests are part of the launch game. Our published party quest explainer and the Kerning City walkthrough cover how they run.
- IGN (in-game name): your character's name. Nexon's FAQ addresses whether IGNs are shared between GMS and Classic World. I will not paraphrase it here, because the current answer is in the FAQ.
- Mob: short for monster. Per mapleclassic.wiki, the launch game has 66 monsters, six of them bosses.
- AFK: away from keyboard. Someone standing still in a map is often AFK, not ignoring you.
- LF: looking for, as in "LF party". It is slang, so it has no official definition.
- Channel (CH): a parallel copy of the same map, so players can spread out. The number of channels at launch is not listed in the fact sheet.
- Buff: a temporary boost from a skill or item. Our four skill build guides cover which skills your branch gets after advancement.
Here is my one anecdote. The first time I saw "LF party for PQ" in the 2007-era client, as I remember it, I had to ask what it meant, and the answer came with a mild scolding. That is why I would rather you learn the vocabulary first. In Classic World today, party quests are confirmed at launch, so that line will be in your chat window.
Character and stat terms
Per mapleclassic.wiki, Classic World has four job branches (Warrior, Magician, Bowman and Thief) plus Beginner, with first and second job advancement only.
- Level: your character's progress rank. Maple Island covers levels 1 to 10, and Victoria Island is level 10 and up, per mapleclassic.wiki.
- EXP: the experience you earn from monsters and quests. The EXP needed per level is not in the fact sheet, so I will not quote it here.
- HP and MP: health and magic points. HP is what you lose when hit, and MP pays for most skills. Specific values are not listed here.
- AP (ability points): points you spend on your character's base stats. Our starting stats guide covers how Classic World handles them.
- SP (skill points): points you spend on skills. Our skill build guides cover where to put them in the first levels after advancement.
- Job: your class. You begin as a Beginner and advance into one of the four branches.
- Branch: the family a job belongs to: Warrior, Magician, Bowman or Thief.
- Job advancement: the step where you pick a branch and gain new skills. At launch there are only two: first job and second job.
- Fame: a reputation stat that players could give one another in the old client. That is memory, not data. The fact sheet gives no Classic World rules for Fame, such as limits or what it unlocks, so check mapleclassic.wiki before planning around it.
Items, scrolls and currency
This is where the fact sheet is thinnest, so expect a lot of "not listed" below.
- Meso (plural mesos): the in-game currency. Prices and drop amounts are not in the fact sheet.
- Drop: an item a monster leaves behind when defeated. No drop rates are recorded in the sources I have, so check any table claiming exact rates against mapleclassic.wiki.
- Equip: a piece of gear your character wears, such as a weapon or hat.
- Scroll: a consumable used to try to improve an equip. Its success rates, costs and slot rules are not in the fact sheet. I will not repeat old numbers from memory, because I cannot confirm they carry over.
- Crafting and professions: per mapleclassic.wiki, crafting launches with six professions. Their names and recipes are not in the fact sheet.
- Free Market: confirmed at launch per mapleclassic.wiki. In the 2007-era client, as I remember it, it was the hub for player-run shops. Fees, limits and layout in Classic World are not listed, so do not assume they are the same.
- NX, Maple Points and MVP: account-level currency and benefits tied to Nexon's store. Nexon's FAQ addresses what is shared between MapleStory and Classic World, including these, so read its current answer before spending.
Maps, monsters and content terms
Per mapleclassic.wiki, Classic World launches with two continents. Here is the vocabulary for getting around them.
- Maple Island: the starting continent, levels 1 to 10.
- Victoria Island: the main continent, level 10 and up. Its towns are Henesys, Ellinia, Perion, Kerning City, Lith Harbor and Sleepywood.
- Town: a hub map with shops and NPCs where you can regroup. The fact sheet does not say which branch each town serves, and our class comparison guide covers fit.
- Map: any single area you move through.
- Portal: the doorway that moves you between maps.
- Spawn and respawn: a monster appearing, and returning after it is defeated. No spawn counts or timers are in the fact sheet, and that includes boss spawn times.
- Boss: a stronger monster. Per mapleclassic.wiki, six of the 66 launch monsters are bosses. Our launch bosses guide covers what the wiki records about them.
- Quest: a task from an NPC for EXP, items or story. The wiki lists 221 quests at launch.
- Citizenship system: listed at launch per mapleclassic.wiki. The fact sheet does not describe how it works, so I will not guess.
- Guild: a player group with its own roster. Guilds are confirmed at launch, with no size limits listed.
Access, package and account terms
For dates, prices and policy, Nexon is the authority. Everything in this section comes from its Classic World FAQ unless noted.
- Founder's Access: early play for owners of a qualifying Founder's Package, starting October 6, 2026.
- Grand Launch: the full public launch on October 21, 2026.
- Wipe: a reset of characters. Nexon says progress made in Founder's Access carries directly into Grand Launch, so there is no wipe between the two.
- Pre-download: installing the client ahead of time. Nexon has published instructions for both Nexon Launcher and Steam.
- Founder's Package: the early-access bundle, in three tiers named Snail, Orange Mushroom and Zakum. All three include Founder's Access from October 6, 2026, and the higher tiers add more items. Prices are not restated here because they can change.
- Zakum (as a package): only a tier name. It is not a boss you can fight at launch.
- Nexon Launcher and Steam: the two ways to run Classic World. Nexon's FAQ confirms Steam sells only the Zakum tier, while the other tiers are sold through Nexon's own store.
- macOS beta: the Mac version. Nexon's FAQ has the install steps and a known-issues note.
- Gamepad support: built in, and the FAQ lists which controllers Nexon has tested.
- Sanctions: Nexon's memo on account sanctions states that they apply across GMS and Classic World, so a ban in one carries to the other.
- Challenger World: Nexon's FAQ addresses transfers from Challenger World to Classic World. Check its current answer.
Terms for content that is not in the launch game
Players who remember the full game will use words that do not apply on October 21, 2026. These are not in the launch game, and nothing here should be read as a promise of them later:
- Third job and fourth job: launch is limited to first and second job. Our third job guide explains what is missing.
- Orbis, El Nath, Ossyria, Ludibrium, Aqua Road, Leafre and Mu Lung: not part of the two launch continents, Maple Island and Victoria Island.
- Pirates, Cygnus Knights, Aran and Evan: not among the four branches plus Beginner.
- Anything introduced after the Big Bang: Classic World is a pre-Big Bang recreation.
If someone in chat offers to explain how to reach one of these places, they are working from memory of a different game. Classic World today has the two continents and the six towns named above.
The launch figures behind these terms
This table gathers the numbers the glossary relies on, so you can check a term against its figure. Counts come from mapleclassic.wiki and dates from Nexon's FAQ.
| Term | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Maple Island levels | 1 to 10 | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Victoria Island entry level | 10 and up | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Victoria Island towns | 6 | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Job branches (plus Beginner) | 4 | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Monsters (mobs) | 66 | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Bosses (within the 66) | 6 | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Quests | 221 | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Crafting professions | 6 | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Founder's Package tiers | 3 | Nexon FAQ |
| Founder's Access start | October 6, 2026 | Nexon FAQ |
| Grand Launch | October 21, 2026 | Nexon FAQ |
The table shows what the launch game contains, not how it plays. The six bosses sit inside the 66 monsters, so they are not an extra count on top. The wiki figures describe scope, not difficulty, and the fact sheet records no spawn counts, drop rates or scroll success rates. Treat any claim about those as unverified until mapleclassic.wiki lists them.
How to decode an unfamiliar chat term
- Check whether it is slang (KS, AFK, LF) or a game system (Citizenship, Free Market). Slang has no official definition, so ask the speaker.
- If it sounds like a place or class, compare it with the launch scope: Maple Island, Victoria Island, four branches, first and second job.
- If it involves numbers such as rates, EXP or prices, look it up on mapleclassic.wiki before acting on it.
- If it involves accounts, packages, bans or NX, read the current text of Nexon's FAQ.
