By the end of this guide you will be able to sort what you remember about the pre-Big Bang client into three piles: what MapleStory Classic World keeps, what it changes, and what nobody has confirmed yet. The facts come from mapleclassic.wiki, including its Differences page, and from Nexon's Classic World FAQ. Where my memory and the published data disagree, or where I cannot check, I will say so.
A note on method first. Classic World is Nexon's recreation of pre-Big Bang MapleStory, and it runs inside the existing Global MapleStory (GMS) client. The scope reads as a deliberate choice: take a bounded slice of the older game, keep it playable from the first level to the second job, and hold the rest back. Understanding that choice explains most of the differences below. I will not claim Classic World matches the old client unless the wiki or Nexon says it does.
The launch game at a glance
Per mapleclassic.wiki, this is what the launch game contains. The table puts the headline numbers in one place so you can hold them against your own memory.
| Feature | Classic World at launch | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Continents | Two | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Maple Island | Levels 1 to 10 | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Victoria Island | Level 10 and up | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Victoria Island towns | Six | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Job branches (plus Beginner) | Four | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Job advancements | First and second | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Monsters | 66 | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Bosses (included in the 66) | Six | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Quests | 221 | mapleclassic.wiki |
| Crafting professions | Six | mapleclassic.wiki |
Read the table as a size statement. Classic World is not a thin demo: it has a full monster roster, a large quest list and a crafting system. But it is a bounded game with a clear ceiling, the second job. Everything in the sections below follows from that ceiling.
What stayed: the map and the early journey
The most recognizable thing that stays is the shape of the early world. Classic World opens on Maple Island, which covers levels 1 to 10, and then moves you to Victoria Island, which is for level 10 and up. Victoria Island's towns, per the wiki, are Henesys, Ellinia, Perion, Kerning City, Lith Harbor and Sleepywood.
Here is my one memory for this piece. In the pre-Big Bang client, the first real moment of the game for me was stepping off the boat into Lith Harbor and realizing the whole continent was open in front of me, with no one telling me which way to go. I cannot tell you from memory that Classic World stages that moment identically, because the wiki does not describe the arrival in that detail. What the wiki does confirm is that Lith Harbor is one of the six launch towns on Victoria Island, and that the journey from Maple Island to Victoria Island is part of the launch game.
The same goes for the job structure. The four branches are Warrior, Magician, Bowman and Thief, plus Beginner. That lines up with how I remember the pre-Big Bang class tree starting out, and the wiki confirms it for Classic World. The design intent is easy to read: four clear archetypes, so the early game has a readable identity and a clean first decision.
If you want help choosing between the branches, the site already has a guide comparing all four. Here the point is narrower: the starting structure is intact, and it is confirmed by the wiki rather than by my recollection.
What changed: the ceiling
The biggest difference is what is missing. Classic World stops at second job. Per mapleclassic.wiki, third job advancement is not available at launch. The wiki also states that Orbis, El Nath and the rest of Ossyria are held back, to be reworked and introduced gradually after launch.
That wording matters, so read it carefully. The wiki says held back and reworked, not cancelled, and it does not give dates or an order. So I cannot tell you when any of it arrives, or what the reworked version will look like. What you can plan around is the launch game as it stands: two continents and two job advancements.
The wiki's Differences page draws the outer boundary. Nothing from after the Big Bang update is part of Classic World: no Pirates, no Cygnus Knights, no Aran, no Evan, and no later continents. In the memory of anyone who played through the later years of GMS, that is a long list of absent content. In Classic World, it is the point of the recreation. The game is pre-Big Bang by design, and the Differences page makes that a rule rather than a mood.
My memory and the launch scope disagree in one specific way. The pre-Big Bang client I remember had places to go beyond Victoria Island. Classic World at launch does not. If you are planning a long-term character around a destination you remember, check it against this list before committing time to it.
Bosses: a name to watch
Bosses are a place where the memory of old MapleStory can mislead you. The wiki lists six bosses among the 66 launch monsters: Mano, King Slime, Mushmom, Zombie Mushmom, Rotten Mushmom and Jr. Balrog. That is the whole list.
Zakum is not on it. Zakum is the name of the top Founder's Package tier, and there is no Zakum boss fight at launch. The three package tiers are Snail, Orange Mushroom and Zakum, and Nexon's FAQ states that all three include Founder's Access from October 6, 2026. If you remember Zakum as an end-game fight, that memory is accurate to the old game but does not apply to the launch client. The site has separate guides on the six launch bosses and on the package tiers, so I will not repeat their details here.
Systems that ship with the game
Beyond the map and the jobs, the wiki lists these launch systems: crafting with six professions, party quests, a Citizenship system, guilds and the Free Market. Together with the 221 quests, they make up the activity layer of the game.
I want to be careful here, because this is where nostalgia tends to overreach. I cannot tell you from memory that each of these systems works exactly as it did in the pre-Big Bang client. The wiki lists them as launch features; it does not, in the facts I have, say how closely each one matches the older version. So treat them as confirmed to exist and unconfirmed as to detail. No drop rates are published in the facts I am working from, and no spawn counts are recorded for the 66 monsters, so I cannot tell you how the grind compares with the older game.
One general design observation: a game capped at second job needs enough to do at those levels. Party quests, guilds, crafting and the Free Market are the kinds of systems that give a capped game some depth. That is my reading of the design, not a statement from Nexon.
What changed around the game: client, platforms and accounts
Some of the biggest differences are not in the game world at all. Per Nexon's Classic World FAQ, Classic World runs inside the existing GMS client, on Nexon Launcher or Steam, with a macOS beta and gamepad support. The gamepad option is a convenience I do not associate with the pre-Big Bang client, though I cannot document the old client's controls from memory, so treat that as a loose impression.
Accounts also tie the two games together. Nexon's memo on sanctions states that account sanctions apply across GMS and Classic World, so a ban in one carries to the other. Nexon's FAQ also addresses what is shared between the two games, including NX, Maple Points and MVP benefits, and whether character names are shared. I will not restate those answers, because the FAQ is the authority and its text can change. Check it directly.
On dates, Nexon states that Grand Launch is October 21, 2026, and that players with a qualifying Founder's Package get Founder's Access from October 6, 2026. Progress made during Founder's Access carries directly into Grand Launch, with no wipe between the two. Nexon has also published pre-download instructions for both Nexon Launcher and Steam.
How to check your own memory against Classic World
If you are returning after a long break, this short routine keeps you from planning around something that is not in the launch game.
- Write down the destinations you remember. List the towns and continents you expect to visit.
- Compare them with the launch list. Maple Island and Victoria Island are in. Henesys, Ellinia, Perion, Kerning City, Lith Harbor and Sleepywood are in. Orbis, El Nath and the rest of Ossyria are held back.
- Check your class plans against the ceiling. If your plan needs third job, it cannot happen at launch, because third job advancement is not available.
- Check your boss plans. Only the six listed bosses exist at launch. Do not plan around a Zakum fight.
- Read the current Nexon FAQ for accounts and platforms. Prices, shared items and names are all subject to change, and the FAQ is the authority.
What the data does not tell us
Being exact means naming the gaps. From the facts available, we do not have recorded spawn counts for the monsters, published drop rates, or any release schedule for the held-back Ossyria content. We also do not have a line-by-line comparison of each launch system against its pre-Big Bang version. Until the wiki or Nexon fills those in, any claim that a mechanic is the same as the old client is a guess, and I will not make it.
Here is where that leaves us today. Classic World is a two-continent, two-job, pre-Big Bang recreation with 66 monsters, six bosses and 221 quests, and the Differences page excludes everything after the Big Bang update. That is what is true now, and it is the version of the game you will be playing from October 6, 2026 for Founder's Access and October 21, 2026 for Grand Launch.
