After reading this guide you will be able to create a character in MapleStory Classic World (called Classic World from here on), place your starting points on purpose, and check your stats against the first job gate for your branch. If you are a pre-Big Bang MapleStory veteran looking for the old dice roll and re-roll, the answer is plain: it is gone. The rest of this guide explains what replaced it and why the replacement matters.
The dice roll is gone: what character creation does now
Per mapleclassic.wiki, starting ability points are chosen, not rolled. In the original game a new character received a random spread, and players re-rolled until they liked it. Classic World has no dice roll and no re-roll. Every primary stat starts at 4, and you place 9 AP directly. AP (ability points) are the points you spend on your primary stats: STR (strength), DEX (dexterity), INT (intelligence) and LUK (luck).
The arithmetic is short. Four stats at 4 is 16 points of floor, and the 9 free points bring the opening total to 25. If you put all 9 into one stat, that stat reaches 13, because 4 plus 9 is 13. Per the same wiki entry, this is the highest any one stat can be at creation. Every first job gate in the next section is higher than 13, so no branch can meet its gate on day one. The gates are met by leveling.
Follow these steps when you create your character:
- Create your character and open the stat screen. You should now see all four primary stats at 4 and 9 AP waiting to be placed.
- Decide which branch you plan to play: Warrior, Magician, Bowman or Thief. Every character starts as a Beginner, and you advance to your branch at its instructor later.
- Look up the gate stat for your branch in the table in the next section.
- Place your 9 AP according to the spread you chose. Add the points one at a time so you can see each change.
- Check the totals before you confirm. You should now see 25 points in total, no unspent AP and no stat above 13.
- Confirm only when the numbers match your plan. Treat the confirmation as final, because AP is permanent (see the section on permanence below).
Nexon's FAQ states that progress made during Founder's Access, which begins on October 6, 2026, carries directly into Grand Launch on October 21, 2026, with no wipe between the two. A character you create at the start of Founder's Access is therefore the character you will play at Grand Launch, and your opening stat choice comes with it.
The job gates: what each branch needs
A job gate is the minimum stat your character must have before the instructor advances you to a first job. Per mapleclassic.wiki, each branch has one gate stat, and each has its own instructor and advancement level.
| Branch | Gate | Instructor and location | Advances at level | Gate stat after all 9 AP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warrior | STR 35 | Dances with Balrog, Warrior Sanctuary, Perion | 10 | 13 |
| Magician | INT 20 | Grendel the Really Old, Magic Library, Ellinia | 8 | 13 |
| Bowman | DEX 25 | Athena Pierce, Bowman Instructional School, Henesys | 10 | 13 |
| Thief | DEX 25 | Dark Lord, Dark Lord's Trade Shop, Kerning City | 10 | 13 |
The last column is identical for every branch because the creation rule is identical: 4 plus 9 is 13. Read the table for the gates and the levels. The Magician gate of INT 20 is the lowest and arrives earliest, at level 8. The Warrior gate of STR 35 is the highest, and the Warrior still advances at level 10, so the Warrior has the most stat to gain before the same point in the level range.
Look at the Thief row carefully. The Thief gate is DEX 25, but per mapleclassic.wiki the Thief's primary stat is LUK. Those are two different stats. The gate decides when you can advance; the primary stat is the one the branch is built around. The fact sheet for this guide does not list damage formulas, so it does not say how much LUK a Thief needs, and this guide does not guess.
The opening spread for each branch
Here is the spread this guide recommends, with its condition: for a new character who wants to reach the first job gate as reliably as possible, and who does not yet know how auto-allocation treats the gate stat, put all 9 AP into the gate stat. The reason is that the gate is the only hard first job requirement the wiki lists. A character that cannot meet it cannot advance, whatever else its stats look like.
- Warrior: STR 13, the other three stats at 4. This leaves the largest distance to cover, since the gate of STR 35 is far above 13. It is also the branch where an early point in the gate stat matters most.
- Magician: INT 13, the other three stats at 4. The gate of INT 20 is the closest of the four to the starting ceiling, and you need it by level 8, two levels earlier than the other branches.
- Bowman: DEX 13, the other three stats at 4. The gate is DEX 25, and DEX is also the Bowman's primary stat, so the gate and the branch point the same way.
- Thief: DEX 13, the other three stats at 4. The gate is DEX 25 and the primary stat is LUK, so LUK stays at 4 in this spread. That is the trade you accept for a safer path to the gate.
This is a conditional recommendation, not a ranking of branches. If you would rather open the Thief with LUK at 13, nothing in the fact sheet forbids it. The cost is that DEX stays at 4, and the distance to DEX 25 becomes the full gate minus 4. Whether that distance closes on its own depends on auto-allocation, and the next section covers what is and is not known about it.
Auto-allocation until level 11, and 5 AP per level
Every level grants 5 AP. Per mapleclassic.wiki, until level 11 your AP is auto-allocated to the Beginner's primary stats. From level 11, allocation is manual. Auto-allocation means the game places the points for you when you level up; you do not choose where they go.
You can act on this in three ways:
- Open your stat screen after each level-up on Maple Island and write down your four stats. You should now see the totals rise without you having spent anything.
- Compare your gate stat with the gate in the table. If you are a Magician, do this check before level 8, because the Magician advances at level 8, not 10.
- If your gate stat is not rising, read the current mapleclassic.wiki entry on how the Beginner's stats are handled before you reach the instructor, not after.
The fact sheet says the Beginner's primary stat varies. It does not list which stats auto-allocation fills, in what proportion, or whether the result is enough to meet a given gate by the advancement level. This guide therefore makes no promise that you reach STR 35, INT 20 or DEX 25 from auto-allocation alone. That is the reason the opening spread puts your 9 points on the gate.
Advancing to a first job at level 10 also grants a small one-time AP bonus. The amount is not listed, so it is not counted in any figure here. Treat it as a small extra, not as part of a plan.
AP is permanent: what to do before you spend it
Per mapleclassic.wiki, AP is permanent without a rare reset item. The fact sheet does not say how rare that item is, where it comes from or what it costs, so do not build a plan around getting one. This is the reason for the extra checks in the creation steps above.
Use this checklist from level 11, when allocation becomes manual:
- At level 11, open the stat screen. You should now see unspent AP waiting, and from here every point is yours to place.
- Before spending, confirm which branch you actually advanced to, and read the requirement for any skill you plan to use. The wiki skill tables list prerequisite skill levels, such as Slash Blast needing Power Strike at level 1 for the Warrior, but they list no stat requirements, so check the wiki entry for anything else.
- Place AP in small batches, not all at once. With 5 AP per level, a single level-up gives you 5 points to place, enough to see what one decision changes.
- Keep a note of every placement. If a stat looks wrong later, the note shows which decision caused it.
You should now see why the 9 points at creation deserve the most care: they are the first points you place yourself, and they cannot be undone without an item the fact sheet gives no details for.
What the data does not tell us
Naming a gap is more useful than filling it with a guess. The fact sheet does not list the following, so this guide does not state them:
- How auto-allocation divides points among the Beginner's stats before level 11.
- The size of the one-time AP bonus at first job advancement.
- How to obtain the rare reset item, or its price.
- Any damage formula that ties a primary stat to attack output.
- Any stat requirement for individual skills beyond prerequisite skill levels.
When mapleclassic.wiki lists these figures, it is the authoritative source for in-game numbers. For dates, packages and accounts, Nexon's FAQ is the authority.
The veteran's quick answer
If you arrived searching for the dice roll, here it is plainly: there is no roll, no re-roll and no random spread in Classic World. Per mapleclassic.wiki, the original game's random spread was replaced with direct allocation. You get 4 in every stat, 9 AP to place and a ceiling of 13 in any one stat at creation. After that, your choices accumulate at 5 AP per level, and they are permanent.
