After reading this guide you will be able to explain what MapleStory Classic World is, which era of the game it recreates, who is behind it, what is playable at launch, and whether it is likely to suit you. It is written for a reader who has heard the name and nothing else, so it starts with the plain definition and builds out from there.
The short answer
MapleStory Classic World is Nexon's recreation of pre-Big Bang MapleStory. It is an official Nexon product, not an unofficial community project. It runs inside the existing Global MapleStory (GMS) client, and you can start it from Nexon Launcher or Steam. Per Nexon's Classic World FAQ, there is also a macOS beta and built-in gamepad support.
The design intent is worth understanding before any mechanic. Classic World is a deliberately smaller game than modern GMS. It takes an earlier, narrower version of the world and treats that narrowness as the point: fewer systems, fewer continents, and a shorter list of things to learn. Everything else in this guide follows from that choice.
What era does it recreate?
The era is pre-Big Bang. The Big Bang update was the point where MapleStory changed its systems and content wholesale. Per mapleclassic.wiki (its Differences page), nothing from after the Big Bang update is part of Classic World. That means no Pirates, no Cygnus Knights, no Aran and no Evan, and no later continents.
One short memory, and a flag about it. In the pre-Big Bang client I played, I thought of the world as Victoria Island first and then a long road onward to Ossyria. That is my recollection, not Classic World data. In Classic World today the road stops much sooner: per mapleclassic.wiki, Orbis, El Nath and the rest of Ossyria are held back, to be reworked and introduced gradually after launch. What is true now is the shorter version, and that is the one to plan around.
I will also be careful on a related point. Nexon and the wiki describe Classic World as a recreation of that era, but neither source in our notes says every number and system matches the old GMS client one for one. Where I cannot confirm a match, I will not claim one.
Who made it, and how it got here
Nexon is the publisher. It revealed Classic World in its 20th anniversary developer video, which was led by original designer Nemi. Since then the project has moved through two closed online tests, a trailer, a launch date announcement, package sales and a Founder's Access window. The table below sets out the timeline from Nexon's published events.
| Date | Event | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| April 1, 2025 | Announced | Revealed in the 20th anniversary developer video, led by Nemi |
| April 1, 2026 | Closed Online Test 1 | First closed online test went live |
| June 1, 2026 | IGN Live trailer | Special trailer aired at IGN Live 2026 |
| August 1, 2026 | Closed Online Test 2 | Second closed online test went live |
| August 11, 2026 | Mobility skill adjustments | Nexon published a patch adjusting mobility skills |
| August 21, 2026 | Launch dates set | Grand Launch set for October 21, 2026 |
| September 2, 2026 | Founder's Packages on sale | Snail, Orange Mushroom and Zakum tiers |
| September 29, 2026 | FAQ and pre-download | Nexon Launcher and Steam instructions published |
| October 6, 2026 | Founder's Access begins | Qualifying package holders start; progress carries over |
| October 21, 2026 | Grand Launch | Opens to everyone |
The practical reading of this table is that there are two start dates. Founder's Access opens on October 6, 2026 for players with a qualifying Founder's Package, and Grand Launch on October 21, 2026 opens the game to everyone. Nexon's FAQ states that progress made during Founder's Access carries directly into Grand Launch, with no wipe between the two. If you start early, you are not playing a throwaway preview.
What is in the game at launch
Per mapleclassic.wiki, launch content is built around two continents: Maple Island, for levels 1 to 10, and Victoria Island, for level 10 and up. Victoria Island has six towns: Henesys, Ellinia, Perion, Kerning City, Lith Harbor and Sleepywood. The wiki also lists the following figures.
| Launch content | Figure |
|---|---|
| Continents | 2 |
| Victoria Island towns | 6 |
| Job branches (Warrior, Magician, Bowman, Thief) | 4 |
| Monsters, including bosses | 66 |
| Bosses among those monsters | 6 |
| Quests | 221 |
| Crafting professions | 6 |
What the table tells you is the shape of the game. Four job branches plus Beginner means you pick a Warrior, Magician, Bowman or Thief path, and the wiki says first and second job advancement are both available. That is the whole class ladder at launch. With 66 monsters and 221 quests, the content is a bounded set you can realistically see most of, not an open-ended catalog.
Beyond those counts, the wiki lists crafting, party quests, a Citizenship system, guilds and the Free Market among launch systems. The six launch bosses are Mano, King Slime, Mushmom, Zombie Mushmom, Rotten Mushmom and Jr. Balrog. We have a separate guide on those bosses, so I will not repeat it here.
What the data does not tell us
The fact sheet gives totals but not breakdowns. It does not list how many quests sit on each map, how many monsters spawn per map, or drop rates for any monster. It also gives no EXP curve. I would rather leave those gaps visible than guess at them, and I will update our guides when mapleclassic.wiki records them.
What is not in the game at launch
The held-back list matters as much as the included list, because it is where expectations most often go wrong. Per mapleclassic.wiki, none of the following are available at launch:
- Third job advancement. Your class progression ends at second job for now.
- Orbis, El Nath and the rest of Ossyria. These are held back, to be reworked and introduced gradually after launch.
- Anything from after the Big Bang update. That covers Pirates, Cygnus Knights, Aran, Evan and any later continents.
One name causes confusion. Zakum is the name of the top Founder's Package tier. It is not a boss you can fight at launch. The six launch bosses are the ones listed above, and Zakum is not among them. Nautilus is also not confirmed, so do not plan around it.
The phrase "introduced gradually after launch" is the wiki's description of Ossyria's future, not a schedule. No dates for that content appear in our sources, so treat it as a direction, not a promise.
How to get in: a short walkthrough
Nexon is authoritative for dates, packages and platform support. If you want to be playing from the first day, these are the steps.
- Decide when you want to start. Founder's Access begins October 6, 2026 and requires a qualifying Founder's Package. Grand Launch on October 21, 2026 is open to everyone.
- Choose a package if you want early access. The tiers are Snail, Orange Mushroom and Zakum. Nexon's FAQ says all three include Founder's Access from October 6, and the higher tiers add more items. Prices are not restated here because they can change; check Nexon's current listing.
- Pick your store. Nexon's FAQ confirms the Steam version offers only the Zakum tier. The other tiers are sold through Nexon's own store.
- Pre-download. Nexon published pre-download instructions for both Nexon Launcher and Steam on September 29, 2026.
- Check your platform. There is a macOS beta, with install steps and a known-issues note in Nexon's FAQ. Gamepad support is built in, and the FAQ lists the controllers Nexon has tested.
Because Classic World runs inside the existing GMS client, you will not be installing a wholly separate game engine. Nexon's FAQ does address running MapleStory and Classic World at the same time, so check its current answer before you assume either way.
Accounts, bans and what is shared
This is the section where players most often assume instead of check. Nexon's memo on account sanctions states that sanctions apply across GMS and Classic World. A ban in one game carries into the other, so Classic World is not a clean slate for a sanctioned account.
On other shared items, Nexon's FAQ addresses whether character names are shared between the two games, what is shared including NX, Maple Points and MVP benefits, and whether Challenger World characters can transfer. Our fact sheet does not restate those answers, and they can change, so read the current FAQ text directly. Likewise, the FAQ covers tier upgrades and whether Founder's Package items expire; check it before relying on an item long term.
Who Classic World is for
Based on what is confirmed, here is who the launch version fits, with the condition stated each time.
- Players who want a contained game. If you prefer a world with two continents and a class ladder that ends at second job, the launch scope is built for that.
- Returning players curious about the pre-Big Bang era. The wiki confirms nothing after the Big Bang update is included. Whether specific details match your memory is something to test in play, not assume.
- New players who find modern GMS large. The bounded counts (66 monsters, 221 quests, four branches) make the game easier to take in. This is my reading of the numbers, not a Nexon claim.
- Social players. Guilds, party quests and the Free Market are listed launch systems.
It is likely not for players who want third job, Ossyria or any post-Big Bang system right now. None of those are available at launch, and no amount of leveling will reach them.
The bottom line
MapleStory Classic World is Nexon's pre-Big Bang recreation, run inside the GMS client, with a deliberately limited launch scope: Maple Island, Victoria Island, four branches plus Beginner, and two job advancements. Founder's Access begins October 6, 2026, Grand Launch is October 21, 2026, and your Founder's Access progress carries over. Plan around what is confirmed, and treat everything held back as later.
